Al-6XN (UNS N08367) is an excellent austenitic stainless steel known for its outstanding resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion. Compared to traditional stainless steel like 316L, this corrosion-resistant alloy offers a notable cost-effectiveness with a substantial overall improvement in corrosion resistance. Additionally, its corrosion resistance is comparable to other corrosion-resistant nickel-based alloys like C-276, with significant cost advantages.
The significant enhancement in corrosion resistance is attributed to the alloy's substantial nitrogen content. This nitrogen addition gives Al-6XN higher tensile strength compared to conventional austenitic stainless steels such as 304, 316, and 317. Importantly, Al-6XN maintains excellent material toughness and impact strength. According to ASME standards, Al-6XN's allowable stress values are 40% higher than those of 316L and nearly double that of copper-nickel alloys.
In practical applications, Al-6XN performs exceptionally well under typical conditions, such as exposure to 60% sulfuric acid at temperatures below 80°C, exhibiting an annual corrosion rate of less than 0.1mm.
