Alloy 20, with the UNS designation N08020, is an austenitic alloy developed primarily for its resistance to sulfuric acid corrosion. This iron-based alloy demonstrates exceptional resistance to sulfuric acid corrosion and boasts strong capabilities against environments containing hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, and chlorides. It effectively resists stress corrosion cracking, pitting corrosion, and crevice corrosion.
Its corrosion-resistant properties make Alloy 20 widely utilized in various industries such as petrochemicals, chemicals, food, pharmaceuticals, power generation, and plastics. It addresses challenges like stress corrosion cracking, point corrosion, and chloride corrosion, making it a preferred choice in applications where these issues are prevalent.
Alloy 20 exhibits outstanding stress corrosion cracking resistance, good localized corrosion resistance, and satisfactory corrosion resistance in many chemical process media. It withstands environments containing chlorine gas and chlorides, dry chlorine gas, formic acid, acetic acid, acid anhydrides, seawater, and saline solutions. Additionally, it resists corrosion in oxidizing-reducing environments and finds application in sulfuric acid environments with halide and metal ion content, such as in wet metallurgy and sulfuric acid industrial installations.
The inclusion of niobium enhances Alloy 20's resistance to sensitization and intergranular corrosion.
Welding Considerations
In welding, Alloy 20 shares common characteristics with nickel alloys. While it generally does not exhibit cold cracking during welding, precautions must be taken to prevent hot cracking. Nickel, sulfur, phosphorus, and other elements form low-melting eutectics, resulting in the formation of coarse dendritic austenitic crystals during solidification. Impurities with low melting points are prone to concentrate at grain boundaries. Strict control of sulfur and phosphorus content in welding materials is advised to mitigate the risk of hot cracking, as the incomplete solidification of low melting point substances at grain boundaries can lead to thermal cracking.
